About the story
“The Five Orange Pips” is one of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It first appeared in The Strand Magazine in 1891 and later became part of the collection, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Since then, the story has made its way into radio adaptations and films. Elements of the story appear in the movie, Sherlock Holmes and the House of Fear as well as in episodes of the American television series, Elementary, and the British TV series, Sherlock.
“The Five Orange Pips” is significant in the collection of 56 short stories written by Doyle narrating the cases of the famous fictional detective in that it shows the less successful side of Sherlock Holmes. While Holmes is usually able to save lives and make the right assertions, this story presents him being wrong on several counts and unable to catch the villain.
